Powerful Winds Leave Tens of Thousands Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals urged to stay indoors as strong winds batter the region.

Powerful gusts reaching velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have left nearly 90,000 properties experiencing outages and led authorities to halt over 100 flights, based on domestic outlets.

These gusts are impacting the entire South Island and southern sections of the North Island, according to the country's meteorological service.

New Zealand authorities have announced rare severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in key areas including Canterbury and Wellington.

People have been urged to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and get ready for further power and communication outages.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Measures

The power cut is primarily influencing homes mostly in the southern region, although agencies state that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have stated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, whereas power lines and trees have been brought down by the gusts.

Within the capital, a man was lost his life after being struck by a wooden fragment at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a woman was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Air travel entering and leaving the urban area have been halted due to the gusts, while some roads and libraries are not operating.

Simultaneously authorities in Canterbury have declared a state of emergency, to assist emergency management operations.

Labor Protests Amid Severe Conditions

The wild winds on Thursday come as tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants are engaged in what has been termed a "significant labor action", requesting improved salaries and workplace environments.

However the extreme weather has compelled them to alter certain arrangements, with several external protests shifted to interior venues or abandoned.

Like conditions are affecting Australia, ushering in a period of extreme heat to the nation's interior regions.

Officials have announced fire bans for apprehension regarding bushfires.
